About
Jenn St. John

Hi, I’m Jenn, and I’m passionate about transforming the conversation around mental health through creativity, connection, and advocacy. Nearly 50 years of life have taught me that we all carry shadows—stories that shape who we are and how we show up in the world. My story began with the challenges of growing up with a parent battling undiagnosed mental illness, an experience that deeply influenced my resilience, empathy, and innovative spirit.

Creativity and curiosity have always been my guiding forces. After excelling both creatively and academically, I pursued a three-year design program out of high school, which launched me into the art and design industry. My passion for storytelling soon led me to the film industry, where I secured an internship in the art department for a television movie. This experience ignited my interest in production, and I later completed a year-long producing internship, ultimately choosing to pursue a career behind the camera.

A few years later, I co-founded my own production company in Toronto with a business partner. Together, we produced films, television shows, and series for national and regional broadcasters. These years were marked by exciting creative collaborations and opportunities, but like many others, our company faced challenges following the 2008 global financial crash. With both of us becoming first-time parents around the same time, we decided to close the business and focus on new chapters. I also shared my knowledge by teaching at Ryerson University’s film program (now Toronto Metropolitan University), where I mentored aspiring filmmakers.

After taking time to raise my young family, I founded Marnie and Michael in 2016, a leather bag company named in honor of my parents. The company’s mission was deeply personal: to support mental health causes with every purchase. While I cherished building this brand, I felt a growing pull to focus more directly on mental health advocacy. Today, I dedicate my energy to writing, keynote speaking, and hosting my podcast, The Shadows We Cast.

Creativity remains my anchor. Whether I’m painting, journaling, or sketching, I find stillness and clarity in the process. This connection between self-expression and mental health is a core part of my message. Through my work, I encourage others to find their own creative outlets to quiet the noise, navigate complexity, and rediscover calm.

On The Shadows We Cast, I dive deep into the often untold stories of mental health—mine, my family’s, and those of my guests. Each episode combines personal reflections, heartfelt interviews, and actionable takeaways, offering listeners a space to feel seen, heard, and inspired.

When I’m not working, I’m a wife and mom to two wonderful children who keep me grounded and energized. I’m also known for giving great hugs (seriously!) and being the kind of listener who truly hears.

I believe we all have the power to create calm, navigate our complexities, and leave a positive mark on the world. Thank you for being here—whether you’re exploring my blog, listening to my podcast, or simply looking for inspiration, I hope you feel a sense of connection and possibility.
